May Day was a quasi big deal in my family growing up. In Swedish culture it was the first day of summer and involved Maypoles, of course. Last night was Walpurgis Night, the night when festivities begin.
May Day was also celebrated by some early European settlers of the American continent. In some parts of the United States, May Baskets are made. These baskets are small and usually filled with flowers or treats and left at someone's doorstep. The basket giver would ring the bell and run away. The person receiving the basket would try to catch the fleeing giver. If they caught the person, a kiss was to be exchanged.
And that is the May day my family celebrated. Well, actually just leaving flowers we picked from the neighborhood, ringing the bell, then running away. I loved it so much that I made it the birthday for Flower, our adopted cat.
I dropped major hints for John to celebrate with me by doing so, but no lo podria. (he's a work in progress. sigh.)
But he did write me a lovely letter! More of that to come later...the next study break :)
